SON Ladelux Headlight & USB charger for Dynamos

Wilfried Schmidt Maschinenbau of Tübingen, Germany, aka SON makes headlights for 6 volt dynamo systems. Their latest is the Ladelux which produces their brightest beam available at 150 lux at 15 kph, the German standard for lux measurement. The beam is shaped much like a high quality automotive Low Beam. If projected on a vertical surface, it's brightest at the top, then getting progressively dimmer towards the bottom. So on the horizontal road surface the beam provides extremely even illumination of the road ahead for the cyclist. It puts most of the light further down the road so you can see at a distance when descending a hill, and there's still plenty of light close to the bike. But the Ladelux also has a High Beam rated at 200 lux, and powered by the internal battery.

Like the Edelux II, the Ladelux has an all aluminum housing and a high quality glass lens instead of a plastic lens, which is common on other headlights. For the winter commuter riding on sanded and salted roads, the Ladelux lens will remain clear for many years without clouding up from sand kicked up by passing cars.

The Ladelux uses the same mirror used in the Edelux II headlight, so the shape of the low beam is identical to that of the Edelux II headlight. But it's brighter at 150 lux vs 100 lux for the Edelux II. Two additional LEDs produce the 200 lux High Beam when selected.

The Ladelux also has a built-in USB charger to keep your GPS or mobile phone charged while on tour. Its internal battery keeps the charging output to your device constant when you have to stop.

The Ladelux is compatible with Schmidt's own SON taillights, as well as most 6 volt dynamo taillights from Busch & Müller. Busch & Müller taillights with their "Brake Tec" function should not be used with the Ladelux headlight as they are not compatible. While current Supernova taillights will work with the Ladelux, there will be no standlight function, since Supernova taillights depend on the Supernova headlight for the standlight power when you're stopped.

The taillight connection on the Ladelux headlight is a female Schmidt Co-Axial connector. So your taillight wire will need to have a male Schmidt Co-Axial connector attached in order to make the connection to the Ladelux headlight. We can sell you a complete taillight wire with the correct connectors at both ends. Or if your bike is "hard wired" for a taillight already, we can make an adapter for you.

The Ladelux uses a handlebar mounted switch to choose between high beam and low beam. There is a 10 cm cable coming from the bottom of the Ladelux to a 4 pin waterproof connector for the switch. Then you attach either a 20 cm cable with the switch attached, or a 40 cm cable, for a total cable length of either 30cm or 50 cm. If the 40 cm cable isn't long enough, Schmidt can make a cable for any length you need. The custom length cable will cost a bit more, and will have to be ordered from Germany. Custom lengths might be needed on some recumbent bicycles.

To use the USB charging function, a cable with a magnetic connector is attached to the side of the switch. These cables come with either an Apple Lightning connector or a USB-C connector, and are available in 3 lengths; 30 cm, 46 cm, and 100 cm.

The photo above needs a bit of explaining. In the top right is the Ladelux headlight with its wired connectors hanging down. Upper left in the photo is the touch sensitive switch for turning the Ladelux off and on, and changing from low beam to high beam.. The switch connects to the 4 pin connector at the end of the 10cm (4") wire that curls upward to the left.
Another wire goes from the headlight to the bottom left of the photo. This is the connection to a taillight. It has a female Co-Axial connector, and your taillight will need to have a wire with a male Co-Axial connector to plug into the female connector to the Ladelux.
Hanging almost straight down is the Co-Axial wire leading to your hub dynamo. Let us know what type of connector(s) your dynamo hub needs and we will attach them here at the length you require. Co-Axial connectors must be soldered to the wire if your hub uses them.
To the right you see the charging connector. It attaches to the switch with magnets and is available in either 30cm, 46cm and 100cm lengths, and at each length, you can choose from USB-C or Apple Lightning connectors.
We stock two lengths of wiring for the handlebar mounted switch; 20cm and 40cm. (Add 10cm to all of these lengths to account for the 10cm lead from the Ladelux headlight.) The switch changes the beam between the 150 lux low beam and the 200 lux high beam. If you need a different length, we can order that from Schmidt in Germany. It can take up to 2 months, and costs more.
The USB charging cable comes in three lengths and with two types of connectors; USB C and Apple Lightning.
